Prat de Comte Fiesta Major (Sant Bartomeu)
August 24, 2026 All day
Date: Weekend nearest August 24, 2026
Distance: 20 minutes by car
Prat de Comte’s summer Fiesta Major celebrates Sant Bartomeu (Saint Bartholomew), maintaining one of the region’s most distinctive festival traditions—an uninterrupted history of traditional games and competitions (jocs tradicionals) that have been celebrated continuously for generations.
What sets this festival apart is its dedication to traditional Catalan games that the village has maintained without interruption, making them increasingly rare in modern Catalonia. The festival program centers around various forms of curses (races), including different traditional running competitions that test speed, endurance, and skill.
Prat de Comte sits higher in the Terra Alta hills than our riverside location, offering cooler temperatures during the August heat. The mountain setting provides dramatic landscape views and a different character from the Ebro Valley festivals. The village is small and remote—genuinely rural Catalonia where farming and traditional ways of life remain central to community identity.
Beyond the traditional sports, expect the full program of Catalan festival traditions: religious ceremonies honoring Sant Bartomeu, community meals where everyone gathers to eat together, live music and dancing in the village square, and activities for children and families.
The 20-minute drive from our finca heads southwest into the Terra Alta mountains, passing through increasingly rural and mountainous terrain. This is deep rural Catalonia—quiet roads, traditional farming communities, and landscapes that feel genuinely remote. If making the drive to Prat de Comte, consider extending your day to explore other Terra Alta attractions like Horta de Sant Joan, Bot’s historic monastery, Els Ports Natural Park mountain landscapes, or Terra Alta wines at local cooperatives.
