Traditional Jota Dance Workshop

28 September @ 11:00 – 13:00
Learn the traditional Catalan dance that’s been part of this region’s culture for generations. This two-hour workshop in Benifallet welcomes everyone – locals and visitors, young people and families – to try their hand (and feet) at the jota.
What Is Jota?
Jota is a traditional folk dance found throughout Spain, with each region having its own distinct style. The Catalan version features lively steps accompanied by guitars, bandurrias (Spanish lutes), and singing. It’s upbeat, social, and more fun than it might sound if you’ve never seen it performed.
The dance involves hopping steps, spins, and arm movements, typically performed in pairs or groups. Don’t worry if that sounds complicated – the workshop is designed for beginners and focuses on having a good time rather than perfect technique.
What to Expect
The workshop takes place in the Sala Polivalent (multi-purpose hall) in Benifallet village center. No experience is necessary, and no special clothing is required – just wear comfortable shoes you can move in.
The instructors will teach basic steps and movements, giving everyone a chance to participate at their own comfort level. It’s as much about experiencing traditional culture as it is about learning precise choreography. Expect a relaxed, friendly atmosphere where making mistakes is part of the fun.
Why Try It?
If you’re curious about local traditions beyond the typical tourist activities, this workshop offers hands-on cultural immersion. You’ll learn something about Catalan heritage while getting some exercise and meeting people from the village and surrounding area.
The workshop is free and open to all ages, making it suitable for families or solo travelers looking for an authentic experience. Even if you’ve got two left feet, the communal aspect of folk dancing means everyone’s in it together.
Practical Details
The Sala Polivalent is in the center of Benifallet, an easy walk from our finca. The village is small enough that locals can point you in the right direction if you’re not sure where to go.
Since the workshop runs from 11:00 to 13:00, you could combine it with lunch at one of the village bars afterward – they’ll likely be buzzing with other workshop participants doing the same thing.
Staying with us in late September? This workshop offers a unique chance to try traditional Catalan dancing right in our village. We can point you toward the Sala Polivalent when you arrive.
